Chalcurb®
Ashitaba Sap Extract
The Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) sap contains more than 20 potent and rare flavanoids known as chalcones. Chalcurb® has more than 8.0% total chalcones measured as 4-hydroxyderricin and Xanthoangelol, two chalcones that have shown clinical effects of decreasing visceral fat, waist circumference, and reducing the hunger hormone ghrelin.*
Chalcurb® has shown through published safety studies to be safe and has a self-affirmed GRAS, an NPN-number issued by Health Canada, and is novel foods approved by EFSA.
What is Ashitaba?
The Ashitaba plant (Angelica keiskei) is native to the Izu islands off Japan’s Pacific coast and has been consumed in Japan for centuries as a nutritious vegetable, medicinal herb, and tea. Ashitaba has a nutritional profile more extensive than the healthiest vegetable but has a pleasant green-tea-like flavor. Ashitaba in Japanese translates to “Tomorrow’s Leaf” because if a leaf was picked today, a new leaf would sprout by tomorrow.
Chalcurb®
A Research-backed Ingredient
Four human studies have shown that 200mg of Chalcurb can have beneficial effects on metabolic health and reduce visceral fat and waist circumference.
In an Open Label study on 15 healthy weight males (BMI: 24) who took either 200mg of Chalcurb or a placebo there was observed an average visceral fat reduction of about 5% in the test group and a 4% increase in the placebo group in 8 weeks. (Ohnishi et al 2017)
A CT scan on the subject with the greatest change showed a 13.3% decrease in visceral fat in 8 weeks. The pink area shows the visceral fat.
In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, 26 overweight male and female subjects (BMI: 25-30) took 200mg of Chalcurb or a placebo. Results showed an even greater average reduction in visceral fat in the overweight subjects than in the normal weight subjects in the previous study with an average reduction of 9.4% at 8 weeks. (Ohnishi et al 2017)
A CT scan on the subject with the greatest change showed a 11.0% decrease in visceral fat in 8 weeks and significant decreases in subcutaneous and total fat.
In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, with 60 overweight subjects, after 12 weeks there was observed a reduction in ghrelin, the “hunger hormone” in the Chalcurb group compared to the placebo group (Kalman et al 2018). An additional double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study with 40 overweight subjects showed subjects that took 200mg of Chalcurb experienced a significant reduction in both visceral fat and waist circumference compared to the placebo group after 12 weeks (Watanabe et al 2024).
Why is visceral fat so bad?
Visceral fat is harmful because it secretes different hormones that then go on to cause trouble in different areas of our body such as insulin resistance and risk for heart disease. Visceral fat is a large contributor to metabolic syndrome, and reducing visceral fat can decrease the risk of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and more.
ChalCurb® has shown through human studies to reduce visceral fat and therefore not only serves as a weight management product but also a supplement to help improve metabolic health. Chalcurb has also shown through a human study to reduce the "hunger hormone" ghrelin.
There are two different types of fat in our body. One is subcutaneous fat, which lays right underneath the skin and can be seen as "love handles" and the fat on the thighs and upper arms. The other fat is visceral fat, which lies deep inside our abdomen and surrounds our internal organs and can be seen through MRI or CT scans. While subcutaneous fat may be the fat that most people notice and want to get rid of, visceral fat is the dangerous fat that can have health consequences.
